Paralympic qualifier held here Saturday
This weekend the Taylor County Sports Complex will play host to a qualifying event for athletes attempting to make the USA team competing at the upcoming Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan this summer.
The Dixie Wheelchair Athletic Association (DWAA) received permission to utilize one of the local sports complex fields on Saturday, May 1, to hold “seated” events for adult paralympians seeking to make their rankings in shot-put, discus and javelin.
The DWAA includes Alabama, Georgia and Florida, and the
organization has a 35-plus year history of providing competitive sports and recreational opportunities for athletes with physical and visual disabilities.
DWAA started in 1978 with the Georgia Invitational Wheelchair Games held in Marietta, Ga., and in 1981 merged with the Alabama association.
DWAA is approved by World Paralympics and sanctioned by Move United. The Taylor County Commission approved the use of the sports complex field for Saturday’s event at its April 20 meeting as part of its consent agenda
