My name is Abraham Hausman-Weiss, I am a Junior at the University of Alabama, and this summer I found myself in Juno Beach, Florida, as a summer college intern for NextEra Energy Resources. As most people would presume due to Florida's location, the most popular summertime activity anywhere in south Florida for young and old alike is spending time at the beach. As I was working and living with several fellow interns from the same company, the beach was a prime location for a large portion of our social weekend and holiday activities. Indeed, before I even began my summer in Juno Beach, I knew this would most likely be the case, and I was therefore worried about the possibility of missing out on valuable time with my friends, due to the general inaccessibility of beaches, as I was born with Spina-Bifida and have pushed a wheelchair for my entire life. Therefore, I did some research to find out if there was a possibility of finding a beach chair that I could rent for the summer, and thanks to the Dixie Wheelchair Athletics Association and the Chiavaroli Loaner Program, I was able to make this a reality. Beach chairs, especially a self-push chair for individuals who prefer a heightened level of independence, are generally quite expensive to buy, and the opportunity to be loaned one for as short a period of time as a single summer is a rare opportunity that I am incredibly grateful for. With the use of the beach chair this past summer, I was able to take my sense of independence that I carry with me daily and bring it with me even to the beach, allowing me to enjoy valuable time with my friends without the stress of having to continuously ask for help. This sense of independence, I might add, can be attributed almost entirely to my 15 years of experience in wheelchair sports, which began at the annual Dixie Games. Thus, I believe that this summer, the Dixie Wheelchair Athletics Association has come full circle in my life. I could not express enough thanks to the Dixie Wheelchair Athletics Association and the Chiavaroli Loaner Program for providing such a rare service that so significantly enhanced my social life and my enjoyment of my leisure time this summer.
